You are Dealer and decide to open the bidding 1♦. Partner responds 1♠. The Opponents are not bidding. What is your call over 1♠?
Show Answer
Bid 3♠. This shows a 17 or 18 points (good 16) with four ♠.
You have 14 HCP (High Card Points) and 3 DUMMY points (you will be Dummy!) so that is a NICE hand! You need to bid more than just 2♠.

You are Dealer. You decide to open the bidding 1♣. Both Opponents are silent throughout the auction. Partner says 1♥.
What is your call?
Show Answer
4♥.
This shows about 19-21 points with four ♥.
You could also bid 2NT to show a balanced 18 or 19 point hand. But that would DENY having ♥ support. Which you have.
If Partner had responded 1♠ your bid would be 2NT.

How about 3♠?
You only have 14 High Card Points but you have a singleton. You will be Dummy. You get to count 3 points for that singleton. Now you have 17 points.
Bidding 3♠ in this auction shows about 17 or 18 points.

Rebidding with Support
Here is your hand:
♠AK96
♥Q943
♦8
♣AK65
You are Dealer and decide to open the bidding ♣. The Opponents Pass throughout the bidding. Partner bids 1♥. What is your call?
Count your points. How many points do you have?
What is your bid?
Show Answer
Answer:
If you said you have 16 points in your hand you were counting High Card Points (HCP) only.
You have a fit for Partner. Partner should have four ♥ to respond and you have four ♥. You will be Dummy. You now get 3 points for your singleton ♦. You no longer just have 16 HCP -- you have 19 points.
With 19 points in support of Partner's major you need to bid 4♥.
If you bid 3♥ (only) Partner is allowed to say "PASS". But Partner should have 6 HCP to respond. Together you have at least 25 points which is enough to make game. Bid the game.
Here is Partner's hand:
♠QT8
♥KJT7
♦AK62
♣98
If you respond 4♥ Partner is going to get very excited with their 13 HCP and bid a slam. After all you are showing about 20 points for your bid.
You can take 12 tricks with both hands.
At the novice game on Tuesday NOT ONE PAIR reached the slam.

Responding to Partner
Here is your hand:
♠AQT4
♥AQ42
♦K962
♣8
You decide to open the bidding 1♦. The opponents passed throughout the bidding. Partner responds 1♠.
What is your bid? You are playing match points.
Show Answer
First thing to think about is "Do you have a fit for Partner?"
When Partner responds they are only showing a four card suit. But you have a four card suit. You have a fit. You need to support Partner.
Bidding:
2♠ would show about 13 to 16 points with four ♠
3♠ would show about 17 or 18 points with four ♠
4♠ would show about 19 to 21 points with four ♠
So now the question is "How many points do you have?"
If you answered 15 points you were only counting your High Card Points. Since you have a fit you can also count Dummy points.
So the question (again) is "How many points do you have?"
You have 18 points. 15 HCP and 3 Dummy points.
Therefore your bid is 3♠.
This is actually the hand that goes with the hand from the last two posts.
Here is the other hand:

♠AQT4
♥AQ42

Rebid Question
Here is your hand:
♠8762
♥AK
♦AQJ6
♣KQ8
You are Dealer and have opened the bidding 1♣. You have agreed that opening 1NT shows 15 to 17 HCP so your hand (with 18 HCP) is too strong to open 1NT.
The opponents Pass throughout the auction.
Partner responds 1♠. What is your bid?
Show Answer
Bid 4♠.
Do NOT bid 2NT.
You have a balanced hand (this is true) and you have the values for a jump to 2NT (18 or 19 HCP) BUT you have a FIT for Partner's suit. With that fit you can now count one more point for your doubleton ♥. That brings you to 20 points. Partner is showing at least 6 HCP. You have enough for a game in ♠. Bid it.
Yes your trump are terrible. But you have the rest of the suits all sewn up. Besides Partner must have some values, somewhere. Maybe they are in the trump suit?
If you decide to bid 2NT Partner can Pass and you will miss out on a game.
If Partner Passes 4♠ (which they probably will) at least you are in game.

Another Rebid Question
Here is your hand:
♠AQ98
♥82
♦K98
♣AKQJ
You decide to open 1♣. Your LHO Passes and Partner responds 1♠. RHO Passes. What is your rebid?
Show Answer
The correct bid on this hand is 4♠. This shows 19 to 21 points and a fit for Partner. Partner is only showing a four card ♠ suit so you should also have a four card ♠ suit.
Some novices think this is a sign off bid. NO. This hand is saying "Hey, Partner. You told me you have 6 HCP and four ♠ and I want to be in a GAME. Since you need about 26 points for game I must have about 20 points to make this bid.
Other bids you should reject:
3♠. This gets the fit across but shows about 17 or 18 points. You have 19 HCP plus 1 Dummy point for the doubleton ♥. You KNOW the partnership belongs in a game. BID the game.
2NT. This shows a balanced hand with 18 or 19 HCP which you have, BUT this also DENIES having a fit for Partner. Tell Partner you have a fit with their ♠.

Rebids by Opener
Here's a hand that came up today.
You hold this hand:
♠KJ74
♥AKQ43
♦7
♣Q63
You are Dealer. What will you do?
Most people opened 1♥ which is a good opening bid.
Now Partner responds 1♠. You have four card support for Partner's suit. What is your bid? What does that show?
There are a few potential responses to your Partner's 1♠ bid. Let's go over them.
You can bid 2♠. This shows a minimum hand with about 13-16 points. But that is points -- not just HCP but also Dummy points.
You can bid 3♠. This shows a medium hand with about 17-18 points. But that is also points -- not just HCP but also Dummy points.
You can bid 4♠. This shows a maximum hand with about 19-21 points. Again that is points -- not just HCP but also Dummy points.
What is your bid?
Let's count the points. There are 15 HCP and also 3 Dummy points for the singleton ♦. That brings us to 18 points.
The correct bid here would be 3♠.

Rebidding when you have a fit for Partner's Major and can count Distribution points
When I open the bidding 1 of a minor and Partner responds with 1 of a major the first thing I want to do as Opener is to support Partner's major. Since Partner only promised 4 in their suit, I need 4 in order to support them. If I have a fit I can now count Distribution points.
Check out these posts for more detailed information on Distribution points:
Distribution Points
Distribution - Counting Shortness with Honors
To support Partner's major I also need to show them whether or not I have just a minimum opening hand, a better than opening hand or a hand that wants to game force it's SO good. I can show this by raising them 1 level, raising them 2 levels or bidding game in their major.
Table to show what the different responses mean. Remember points includes HCP (High Card Points) and also Dummy points.
Check out this post for more practice on raising Partner's major without using Dummy points:
Rebidding when you have a fit for Partner's Major
Another tip. Balanced 18 HCP points. Look at this hand:
♠ KQ8
♥ KQJ2
♦ KJ86
♣ K7
Very nice hand. I will open the bidding 1♦ because I am too strong to open 1NT. Partner responds 1♥. I have a fit so now I can count Dummy points. Since I have 18 HCP and 1 Dummy point this brings my total to 19 points and I should therefore bid a game. Nice in theory, but not so good in practice. Opposite a balanced 6 HCP hand I don't want to be in game. Experience has shown me that with a balanced 18 HCP I should NOT count an extra point and bid game. Bidding 3♥ shows a very nice hand. Partner will raise on 8 points. If Partner has to say "Pass" to 3♥ we probably shouldn't be in game. So don't count extras for any doubletons if you have 18 HCP with a balanced hand.
So with ALL that in mind on each of the following hands I opened the bidding 1♦. Partner then bid 1♥. I have a fit for Partner's ♥ since I have 4 of them. Since we will play in ♥ I will be Dummy and can now count Dummy points. What do I do on the following hands?

Rebidding when you have a fit for Partner's Major
So you've opened 1 of a minor and partner bid 1 of a major. What do you know about partner's hand? You know that partner has at least 6 HCP and at least 4 cards in that major suit. To have an 8 card fit with partner you need 4 cards in that major also. If you have a fit with partner's major you want to show that right away. (If you don't then partner will never believe you have 4 in that major later on in the auction.) When you support their major you need to also show them whether or not you have just an opening hand, a better than opening hand or a hand that wants to game force it's SO good. You can show this by raising them 1 level, raising them 2 levels or bidding game in their major.
Remember to bid game in a major you should have at least 25 points between you and your partner.
On the following hands you would have opened 1♦. Assume your partner responds 1♥. It is your turn to bid. Count your HCP. What will you say?
