Fabulous Rebid?
Playing matchpoints. You are vulnerable and the Opponents are not vulnerable.
Here is your hand:
♠T2
♥Q8
♦AKQJ75
♣AT9
You are Dealer. We decided last post to open 1♦. You are unbalanced with no stoppers in either major so that is why you didn't open 1NT. The Opponents stay silent during the bidding. Partner responds 1♠.
You have a fabulous bid to describe your hand perfectly! What is your call?

Rebids
Playing matchpoints. You are vulnerable and the Opponents are not vulnerable.
Here is your hand:
♠T2
♥Q8
♦AKQJ75
♣AT9
You are Dealer. What is your call?
Show Answer
I think 1♦ is the best call.
You do have 16 HCP (High Card Points) but you are not totally balanced. You have two doubletons.
Plus both those doubletons are weak with no stoppers in them.
Now sometimes we are stuck and have to open the bidding 1NT with two doubletons. But only if we are stuck for a rebid. You are not.
Open 1♦ and you have a good rebid to show your hand.
Just what is this rebid? Stay tuned and find out! (I love these cliffhangers!)

Rebidding!
Playing matchpoints. Neither you nor the Opponents are vulnerable.
Here is your hand:
♠AQJ962
♥Q93
♦A3
♣A9
You are Dealer. You open the bidding 1♠. The Opponents are silent during the auction. Partner responds 1NT.
What is your call?
Show Answer
3♠
This shows a GOOD six card suit with 16 to 18 HCP. Perfect!
If you bid 2♠ you tell Partner you have a six card suit but you also tell Partner you have a minimum opening hand. You don't. You have 17 HCP!
If you bid 2♠ Partner will "Pass" (they only have 8 HCP) and you will take 10 tricks.
If you bid 3♠ Partner will bid 4♠ (game!) and you will take 10 tricks.

Rebids
Playing matchpoints. You are vulnerable and the Opponents are not.
Here is your hand:
♠A2
♥AT9
♦64
♣AKQT76
You are Dealer and decide to open the bidding 1♣. The Opponents are silent through the auction. Partner responds 1♠. What is your call?
Show Answer
3♣
This shows a GOOD six card suit with 16 to 18 HCP. Perfect!
If you rebid 2♣ only your Partner might "Pass" thinking you have only a minimum opening hand. You might not even have six ♣ to rebid 2♣. You might have only five.

Rebidding your Major
Here is your hand:
♠94
♥AKQT98
♦K3
♣A65
Partner opens the bidding with a "Pass". The Opponents are silent during the auction. You decide to open the bidding 1♥. Partner now bids 1♠. What is your call?
Show Answer
How about 3♥?
This shows 16 to 18 HCP with a GOOD six card ♥ suit.
The problem with rebidding 2♥ is that Partner will never think you have this nice of a hand. You can't or you would have bid 3♥.

Rebid dilema
Here is your hand:
♠QT9
♥AK9432
♦A
♣K32
You are Dealer and open the bidding 1♥. The Opponents are silent during the auction. Partner bids 1♠. What is your call now?
Show Answer
How about 3♥?
This shows 16 to 18 HCP with a GOOD six card ♥ suit. Your suit is pretty good and it does describe your hand. The problem with bidding 2♥ is that Partner will never believe you have this good of a hand.

Rebidding Question
Here is your hand:
♠KJ2
♥AKQJ62
♦AT
♣T4
You decide to open 1♥. Your LHO Passes and Partner responds 1NT. RHO Passes. What is your rebid?
Show Answer
The correct bid on this hand is 3♥. This shows 16 to 18 HCP and a six card suit.
(Some people might bid even more on the hand to show a much stronger hand. That is a good bid also. What I DON'T want novices to bid is 2♥. That bid shows a MUCH weaker hand. That bid shows 13-15 HCP with a six card suit. Your hand is MUCH stronger than that.)

Rebidding that Heart suit
Here's a hand that came up the other day.
You hold this hand:
♠AQ6
♥AKJ842
♦Q8
♣T2
You get to open the bidding and everyone opened 1♥. Your LHO Passes and your Partner bids 1NT. Your RHO Passes and it is your turn to make a rebid. What will you bid now?
Think about it.
How many HCP do you have? What did you promise Partner when you opened the bidding?
Most players rebid 2♥ on this hand. This shows six ♥ (which you have) but also LIMITS your hand to about 13-15 HCP. You have more points than that. You need to not only show Partner you have six ♥ but also show Partner you have a better hand than just a minimum opening.
On this hand you should rebid 3♥. That shows six ♥ and about 16-18 HCP.
Partner had:
♠K8
♥Q6
♦K7532
♣9853
and Passed the 2♥ rebid. Everyone took 10 tricks on the hand. If you had rebid 3♥ Partner would have raised to 4♥ and you would not have missed a game.

Rebidding your original suit - Diamonds
When it comes to rebidding my minor suit, things are not as clear cut as they were when I opened 1 of a major and rebid that major. First of all, when I opened 1 of a minor I only promised 3 of them. So when I rebid my minor suit I only technically need 5 of them. I also need to work in the fact that I want to find a major suit to play in first and if my hand is somewhat balanced I'd prefer to be in NT rather than a minor.
Say I open the bidding 1 ♦ and Partner responds with 1♥. The first thing I want to do as Opener is to support Partner's major.
Since Partner only promised 4 in their suit, I need 4 in order to support them. If I have a fit I can now count Distribution points. Check out these posts for more information:
Rebidding when you have a fit for Partner's Major and can count Distribution points
Rebidding when you have a fit for Partner's Major
Distribution Points
Distribution - Counting Shortness with Honors
If I don't have a fit for Partner's ♥ I will now bid 1♠ before anything else. That would show a 4 card suit and also DENY having a fit for Partner. Afterall I will always show support for Partner first.
If I do not have a fit for Partner's ♥, and I do not have 4 ♠ then what? With a minor I sometimes want to play in my minor suit BUT I also prefer to play in NT if I can. So what are my choices here?
If you have a 6 card ♦ suit I probably want to rebid my suit. If I rebid 2♦ I show a minimum opening hand with a 5 (or more) card ♦ suit. If I have more values I can jump to 3♦ to show 16 to 18 HCP with a GOOD 6 card ♦ suit. Note that I do NOT get to count distribution points here. I have no idea Partner and I have a fit. This is High Card Points only!
If I have a 5 card ♦ suit I probably want to bid NT rather than rebidding my minor suit. But I should have a balanced hand and high cards in both other suits in order to do this. If all my values are in my ♦ suit or my hand is unbalanced I'll probably rebid my minor instead.
With that in mind on all the following hands you opened the bidding 1♦. Partner responded 1♥. It is your turn to bid again. What will you bid and what does it say about your hand?

Rebidding your original suit - Spades
Once you opened the bidding 1♠ and partner responds 1NT, if you have a 6 card ♠ suit you want to rebid your suit. If you rebid 2♠ you show a minimum opening hand with a 6 card ♠ suit. If you have more values you can jump to 3♠ to show 16 to 18 HCP with a GOOD 6 card ♠ suit. Note that you do NOT get to count distribution points here. You have no idea you and your partner have a fit. This is High Card Points only!
With that in mind on all the following hands you opened the bidding 1♠. Partner responded 1NT. It is your turn to bid again. What will you bid and what does it say about your hand?
