Jacoby Transfers - Completing the Transfer (Easier)

If you are playing Jacoby Transfers and you open the bidding 1NT Partner sometimes will bid 2♦. Since you are playing Jacoby Transfers this says NOTHING about Partner's ♦ suit. It says "Partner I want you to bid 2♥". Partner will then further describe their hand.

If you are playing Jacoby Transfers and you open the bidding 1NT Partner sometimes will bid 2♥. Since you are playing Jacoby Transfers this says NOTHING about Partner's ♥ suit. It says "Partner I want you to bid 2♠". Partner will then further describe their hand.

If you agreed to play Jacoby Transfers here is a table of responses allowed after you open the bidding 1NT.

When Partner responds either 2♦ or 2♥ to your opening 1NT bid we call this a "transfer bid". When Opener bids either 2♥ or 2♠ we say they are "completing the transfer".

If you are playing duplicate bridge there are several things you need to do. First of all when someone in the partnership opens the bidding 1NT their Partner is required to announce what their NT range is. So Partner would say "15 to 17" out loud so the opponents can hear.

If you are playing transfers and Responder bids 2♦ over your 1NT opening you are required to state the suit Partner is transferring you to -- so "Hearts". You would then bid 2♥ to complete the transfer.

If you are playing transfers and Responder bids 2♥ over your 1NT opening you are required to say state the suit Partner is transferring you to -- so "Spades". You would then bid 2♠ to complete the transfer.

Question:When Partner bids 2♦ what if I only have 2 small ♥ in my hand. Do I still have to bid 2♥?
Answer:Yes. You have no idea how many ♥ Partner has. Maybe they have quite a few -- they have a MINIMUM of 5 but could easily have more. Maybe you won't even end up in ♥. Who knows? You still have to bid 2♥.

Question:When do I say "Hearts" or "Spades"?
Answer:After you have opened the bidding 1NT if your partner has responded either 2♦ or 2♥ you say the suit they have out loud right away. So BEFORE your RHO (Right Hand Opponent) has a chance to bid.
