Playing in a 5-3 Fit rather than a 4-4 Fit

Did you figure out why you can take more tricks in rather than ♠?

It's because your side suit has more length in one hand. Therefore you can throw away losers from the other hand. This makes it so you can shorten a suit and then trump it later.

So in this example:

Dummy
♠KQ8
AK53
9652
♣J8

Declarer:
♠AJT54
QJ72
AK4
♣6

Playing in you have a nice side suit -- the ♠. Since you have five ♠ in your hand and only 3 ♠ in Dummy you can throw away two losers in Dummy. If you throw away the losing you can then trump the losing in your hand. That comes to 12 tricks!

Playing in ♠, once you take out trump you have equal length in your side suit -- the . You cannot throw away any losers here since you have to follow suit!

The four-four fit (by that I mean playing in a contract where you have four trump in one hand and four trump in the other hand) plays better than the five-three fit (by that I mean playing in a contract where you have five trump in one hand and three trump in the other hand) most of the time. Only when trumps break badly are you better off in your five-three fit.
