If you are going to bid again you should bid 3♣. This bid shows a VERY strong hand (which you have) but is also non-forcing. Partner can "Pass" this bid -- and will! They are very weak and don't want to be any higher.

3♣ will make but game won't -- Partner is too weak.

How about "Double"?

In this auction it is still essentially the same as a "Take Out Double". It basically means "BID something Partner, because I have some stuff I haven't showed you but I don't know what to do!"

You could also make a reverse -- bid 2♥. This would show a strong, unbalanced hand -- which is what you have. But you ALSO have support for a long ♦ suit Partner might have.

Doubling gives Partner more choices. Everyone loves to be given a choice. It still shows a strong hand (with a weaker hand you would just "Pass") but now you are saying you can support anything BUT ♠. You want to play in PARTNER's longest suit.

Turns out Partner has a WEAK hand (obviously, they did "Pass" your opening bid!) with SIX ♦.

If you Double (and are aggressive enough in the bidding!) you can bid (and MAKE!) 5♦! That's game!

If you reverse, you will find your ♣ fit but you can only take 10 tricks if ♣ are trump. That's not enough for a game.

You could overcall 2♦ but if Partner has no points, a singleton ♦ and 5 or 6 cards in either black suit you'd prefer they play in their suit.

Tell Partner you have values and can support any suit they could bid. It gives Partner options which is always better than singlehandedly determining the contract.

How about Double? Get Partner to pick the suit to play in?

You can't overcall 1NT even though you have a perfect 1NT opening bid. That promises a stopper in the suit the opponents opened.

You also can't overcall 2♦. That promises at least a five card suit.

But you also hate to say "Pass" on the hand. You'll never play in a contract if you "Pass" with these hands.

If you "Double" Partner will compete and maybe you will scare the Opponents away from their ♠ contract. Maybe not, but at least you gave it a shot.

How about Double?

This is a TAKE OUT Double. You are asking Partner to pick any suit BUT ♠ to play in. (You are secretly hoping they have four ♥ so you have found a fit.)

Now NORMALLY you would open the bidding 1NT. You have a balanced hand with 17 HCP.

But when your RHO opens the bidding you also promise a STOPPER in the suit they opened. You do NOT have a guaranteed winner in ♠. If Partner raises you to 3NT with 10 HCP you look very silly when the Opponents lead a ♠ and take the first five tricks.

How about Double?

This is a PENALTY Double. You are saying you have the equivalent of the upper range of the Opponent's 1NT bid. So about 17 or more in this case.

I would also HIGHLY recommend that you have a GOOD STRONG SUIT LEAD. Don't just do this because you have a balanced hand with 17 HCP all in Kings and Jacks. Your RHO will keep throwing you in and you might have to lead into their AQ holdings!

But with this hand I think we can both agree you have a very good lead with the ♣ suit!

So now that I have discussed what suits I have for the double I should probably say a few words about the hands I could have.

In that auction I have ♠ and ♦. But what is my shape? What are my values?

I need at least four cards in both the suits that I am showing. In a normal Take Out Double you are allowed to have a three card suit. That is because you are giving Partner the choice of THREE suits. This time you are giving Partner the choice of only TWO suits. You need BOTH of them.

Ideally you would have five cards in one suit and four cards in another suit. With this shape you only need 10 HCP. The rest you make up for in shape.

If you have four cards in both suits your shape isn't nearly as good. With this shape you probably need at least a good 12 HCP.

Ideally you would have four cards in any major and five cards in any minor you are showing. The reason for this is that you can always make an Overcall with a five card suit and you always want to tell Partner about any major you would have. But this isn't always the best thing to do.

The best thing to do is to use your judgement.

If your values are all in the suits the opponents are bidding maybe you just want to Pass. For instance:

I would not recommend Doubling to show ♠ and ♦ with this hand. Yes, you have the shape. Yes, you have the values. But ALL your values are in the OPPONENTS suits. That won't help you.

Should you always make an Overcall with a five card major?

I would not recommend making a 1♠ overcall on this hand. Double to show ♠ and ♦ with this hand. The ♠ suit is pretty ratty for an overcall.

It's tough. You have to have some hand judgement. You can't just say with x amount of points and y in each of the suits do this. You could get into trouble. But sometimes you do have to risk bidding when you might not want to. Just a judgement call. I would recommend at least a good 9 or 10 HCP to be in your two suits to be safe. But safety is not guaranteed at all.

When Partner responds to your Take Out Double by bidding the opponents suit this is a CUEBID. It tells you that Partner wants to go to game but is unsure where. They are asking YOU to further describe your hand. After all sometimes you are stuck doubling with only one four card major. If you have four cards in one major but not the other bid the major you have four cards in. If you have four cards in BOTH majors you can cuebid right back to them. If the opponents stick in a bid keep in mind you do NOT want to go past game in a major!

There is NO NEED to jump to bid the suit you have your four card major in. Partner will not Pass. They wanted to go to game, remember? They CUEBID.

After Partner's take out double do we only make a cuebid when we want to play in 4 of a major?

If Partner doubles my LHO opponents opening 1♣ bid I KNOW we want to be in game. But again I am not sure what game we want to play in. Partner could have doubled on either of these hands:

If Partner doubled on Hand A I want to play in 4♠. We have a 4-4 fit. If Partner doubled on Hand B I want to play in 3NT. We do not have a fit in ♠ so I do not want to play there. But I do want to play in game and 3NT should be the best game. How do I ever guess correctly?

You don't guess. You ASK Partner. You CUEBID the opponents suit. So on this hand I will bid 2♣. That IN NO WAY means I want to play in 2♣. Remember Partner doesn't have ♣. If I have lots and lots of ♣ I'll just Pass and let my LHO play in 1♣ Doubled. This bid just asks Partner to bid their four card major. Plus it lets Partner know we are going to game so I don't have to worry about Partner Passing when I don't want them to.

Keep in mind that sometimes we KNOW where we want to play. No need to cuebid then. Just bid the game you want to play in.
