For all you Blackwood lovers there is no need to ask for Aces on this auction. You shouldn't be off two of them. Otherwise Partner has a bit of explaining for their 3♠ bid.

Even if you do have a nice ♦ fit you might have a ♠ fit as well. Try for that first.

DEFENCE! Defence is VERY difficult. Too many things to keep track of and you have NO IDEA what Partner has! But we all have to defend at times. So it is best to get used to it. (Or bid more.)

From a holding of KQT4 you lead the King. Top of a sequence. In a sequence the third card down is allowed to skip by one pip.

So from KQJx you lead the King. A perfect three card sequence.

From KQTx you also lead the King. Here you SHOULD have the Jack but the Ten is different from the Jack by only one pip. (One spot, one card, one rank. However you want to say it.)

But from KQ9x you lead the x. Here the NINE is different from the Jack by TWO pips or two spots or two cards. So you are no longer allowed to lead the King in NT. (Trump is another story!)

You decide that it is a GOOD thing you won that trick so you continue with the Q♠. Now Declarer wins the A♠ and plays a low ♦ towards the Dummy.

You decide to play low. Declarer wins the K♦ and then plays the Q♦. You are now FORCED to win the A♦. What do you play now.

I would tell you what Partner played on the ♦ and on the ♠ but it wouldn't matter anyhow. You are not playing any signals whatsoever. So whatever cards Partner played do not help you right now.

Now you need to play the T♠

If you played a ♠ that is good. You originally started with the ♠ suit and there is NO REASON to switch now. It is still your best suit.

At this point you have the ♠T4 left. With TWO cards in the suit play your HIGHEST card first. The T♠ is your highest card in the suit you are playing.

At the table this hand played the 4♠.

What's the difference?

The ♠ suit got blocked. Here is JUST the ♠ holding from the start:

When you started ♠ and continued ♠ the situation was now this:

You were in with the A♦. At this point all you had to do was cash your three remaining ♠ winners.

If you played the T♠ Partner will not mess this up. They can always OVERTAKE your T♠ with their J♠ and run the rest of the ♠ OR they can play a low ♠ and let you win the T♠. Then you can continue with a low ♠ and Partner's ♠ are good. But when you play the 4♠ what is Partner to think? They can try playing the 9♠ BUT they look silly if Declarer has the T♠. All they had to do was win the J♠ and run the rest of the winners. If you played the 4♠, then Partner (rightly so) won the J♠ and returned a ♠. But the suit was now blocked. Partner had ♠ winners but no entry to get in with to play them.

Now (to be fair) her Partner knew exactly what she had. HEARTS.

But this bid shouldn't show ♥. The OPPONENTS have FIVE ♥ in ONE HAND! There is NO WAY this hand could ever want to play in ♥.

You do have a nice hand. (Nothing great.) But you do want to respond to Partner.

A nice bid with this hand is 1NT.

That tells Partner you have a balanced hand with about 8-10 HCP and a guaranteed ♥ trick. (That's the stopper we talked about recently.)

What do you think? Better bid? I can tell you right now Partner would rather play in NT than in ♥. And so should YOU!

You have two lovely five card suits. Which one to bid first?

You might think you bid the suit with the most values in it. No. With two five card suits ALWAYS bid the HIGHER RANKING suit first.

Why?

Because later on you get to bid your lower ranking suit.

What happened at the table is this hand bid 2♣. Partner then responds 2♥.

Now what?

Now you have to bid again. So you bid 3♦.

But now if Partner likes your better ♣ than your ♦ they have to bid 4♣. You will have gone by 3NT. Plus now you show LONGER ♣ than ♦. You have the same length.

If you first respond 2♦ watch what happens. Partner will respond 2♥. But now you can rebid 3♣. Now Partner can bid 3♦ to show a fit PLUS you will NOT have gone by 3NT which is probably the best spot to play in.

How BEST to play this suit?

The experts seem to know just how to play the contract exactly right. Some of that is playing suits in the proper way to avoid losers that might not be apparent from the beginning.

Take this hand from Tuesday:

You are Declarer in a contract of 4♠. The whole contract depends on playing the trump suit for NO LOSERS! How do you play the suit?

Think about it. This is tough.

If one opponent has all FIVE trump you will have a loser for sure.

If the trump split evenly (3-2) it doesn't really matter how you play the suit. You will not have any losers.

You have no idea how the trump is breaking. There were no clues from the auction. No opponent looked especially pleased you got to game in ♠. How do you play the suit?

The only holding that matters is if the trumps are 4-1 with the missing J9♠ to be with the four card holding.

If this holding is on your left you will have to lose a trump.

If this holding is on your right you do NOT have to lose a trump.

So because of this you need to play for RHO to (maybe) having four to the ♠J9.

But how do you know whether they do or do not?

You COULD start by playing the Q♠ and then a low ♠ to the T♠. This will ensure you take all the tricks if RHO has four to the ♠J9.

But what if LHO has J92? You look very silly then. You could have just played the ♠A, ♠K and Q♠ and made the contract!

Hmmmm.

The proper way to play the suit is this:

Start by playing the ♠A (or ♠K) from your hand first. Then play a low ♠ towards the ♠Q. AT THIS POINT if everyone follows suit to the trump then you can play your remaining high honour and you have no trump losers.

However if, when playing a low ♠ towards your ♠Q in Dummy, your LHO shows out of ♠ (they play another suit) then you KNOW your RHO has four to the ♠J. You can win the Q♠ in Dummy and play a low ♠ towards the ♠KT for NO LOSERS!

Watch for holdings that contain Tens. Without the Ten (say the Ten was the 2♠) it wouldn't matter how you played that suit. You'd need the suit to break 3-2.

Partner does not even promise four ♦ on this auction. They might only have three. You might not have a fit.

It ended up being fine. Partner DID have ♦ and only a singleton ♥.

But it didn't have to work out.

Remember, if you respond 1♥ and Partner does not support your ♥ you can always go back to ♦ and support Partner later on.

Overcall Question

This hand came up last Tuesday:

Most players overcalled 1NT with this hand.

You have 16 HCP and a balanced hand. This is a perfect 1NT opening bid.

BUT you did not get to open the bidding. Your RHO opened the bidding and they opened the bidding 1♦. You are now OVERCALLING 1NT rather than OPENING 1NT.

What's the difference?

Not much. You need the balanced hand. You also need the 15-17 HCP (though most players play you could also have 18 HCP to overcall 1NT). However to OPEN the bidding 1NT you do not need a stopper in the Opponent's suit. (Mostly because the Opponents haven't bid yet so they have no suit!)

To OVERCALL 1NT you are supposed to have a STOPPER in the suit the Opponent opened.

What is a stopper?

Basically a card that will STOP the Opponents from taking the first five or six tricks. In other words, a GUARANTEED winner in the suit the Opponents opened.

Holding in the ♦ suit that would guarantee a trick:
♦A83
♦KJ64
♦QJT6
♦AJ65
♦KQ4
Heck, even:
♦JT98
if we are desperate.

On ALL the above holdings, if the Opponents lead a ♦ we are sure to take a trick.

Why? Why do we need a stopper?

Mostly because it is assumed that the Opponents will lead their suit. You need to make sure that they won't take the first six or seven tricks with that suit! Extreme example, but I did have a six card suit to the AKQJ one time when the Opponents bid up to 3NT. Needless to say they did NOT make that contract!

So that means that this hand probably should not overcall 1NT.

Is there a better bid?

How about a Take-Out Double?

That would be my choice.

Don't play Take-Out Doubles?

Sure, Overcall 1NT and hope that Partner doesn't leap to 3NT. Or if they do, hope the Opponents don't lead a ♦. Or if they lead a ♦ hope Partner can win a trick. Or maybe the Opponents only have a four card suit....You might get away with it and then you can resolve to learn Take Out Doubles!

Here you can win the trick with the 8♠! Then you have FOUR ♠ tricks!

Here's another one. This time I'm only going to give you the trump suit.

You start with a low ♠ towards the K♠. That loses to the A♠ on your right. The opponents play a card and you win in your hand. You now play the J♠ and your LHO throws away a ♥. They have no more trump!

You are now down to this:

The opponents play another card and you win in Dummy. You have to take out the last two trump. You play a low ♠. Your RHO plays the 3♠. What do you play?

The 8♠ should win the trick! LHO is out of ♠, remember?

These plays seem so OBVIOUS here. But WATCH when you are actually playing the hand. Each of these plays was made today and each of these plays cost a few matchpoints. They add up.

Now I get it. Sometimes you are distracted. Perhaps the first hand Declarer was wondering why Partner couldn't invite to game?

Perhaps the second hand Declarer was wondering why Partner couldn't force to slam?

The third hand Declarer was down 3. Perhaps she was thinking it didn't really matter anyhow? The difference between down 2 and down 3 here was 4.5 matchpoints. That's a big deal.

So next time this happens try to concentrate on the cards. Do NOT worry about where you should be. Concentrate on where you are and try to get the most number of tricks you can. WATCH the spot cards.

Another Opening Dilema

With both minors having three cards in them open the bidding 1♣. ALWAYS. There is no exception to this. Ever.

Partner has dealt and opened the bidding 1♣. You respond 1♠. That bid is pretty easy. No point in jumping in the bidding. 1♠ is a forcing bid and Partner must bid again. I MUST remember to get this partnership to game because Partner opened the bidding and I have an opening hand.

The opponents Pass throughout the auction.

Partner responds 2NT. What is your bid?

Wait a minute. First tell me what Partner is showing for their bid.

Now what is your bid and where do you eventually want to be?

Most students bid 3♦ and then when Partner rebids 3NT they Pass. After all the partnership is in game.

But think about it. How many points did Partner show when they bid 2NT?

Yep, about 18 or 19 points. These should be HIGH card points also. So Aces and Kings.

You have a fit so now YOU (if you are Declarer) get to count LENGTH points. That's two extra points in your hand. You now have 14 HCP and 2 Length points. That's 16 points.

Partner should have 18 points minimum.

Bid 6♦.

Some students like to bid Blackwood to find out about Aces. No need to do that here. You can't be off two Aces. (You do have three of them.)

Bidding 6♦ tells Partner you wish to play in a small slam. But PARTNER gets to choose the suit. You bid 1♠ originally so your ♠ should be as long as or longer than your ♦ but you should have at least five cards in both suits. That way you know you have a fit somewhere. You are just not sure where. Partner can either Pass 6♦ or bid 6♠ with three ♠ in their hand.

On this hand Partner might even bid 6NT because they hold:

and have the rest of the suits well stopped.

Opener rebids with a FIVE and FOUR card suit

The last few post were talking about taking your Partner out of their 1NT response if you were unbalanced with a five card suit and a lower ranking four card suit.

What happens if Partner doesn't respond 1NT. What should you rebid then?

Well if Partner responds 1 of a major and you have a fit you should support them.

Opener shows a FIVE card Diamond suit and a FOUR card Club suit

The last few post were talking about taking your Partner out of their 1NT response if you were unbalanced with a five card major and a lower ranking four card suit.

Does the five card suit have to be a major?

No! You could have 9 cards in the minors.

You decide to open the bidding 1♦ and Partner bids 1NT. Bidding 1NT as Responder does NOT say they have a balanced hand. It just says Responder has 6 to 10 HCP and no four card major.

You should take Partner out of their 1NT and bid your lower ranking four card suit. In this case bid 2♣.

This shows a FIVE card ♦ suit and a four card ♣ suit.

Right now I can hear you screaming:
"Wait a minute! Why does this suddenly show FIVE ♦? When I open 1♦ I only promise three cards in the suit!"

This is true. When you opened the bidding you only showed three cards in the minor.

But you rebid 2♣. You must have a four card ♣ suit.

Opener will always open their LONGEST minor.

You opened 1♦. Your ♦ are longer than your ♣. So if you have four ♣ and your ♦ suit is longer, you must have five ♦.

If you had four cards in each of the minors you might open 1♦ but then when Partner responds 1NT you would probably just leave Partner there. You would be balanced.

(Just want to mention that some people play this just shows 9 cards in the minors -- you might have five ♣ and four ♦ to bid this way. That is another discussion that we shall ignore for now.) So try bidding these hands:
