Responding to 1 Diamond

When partner opens the bidding if you have at least 6 HCP you should respond. In bridge we are all about finding a major suit fit. So a major suit where you and your partner have at least 8 cards in that suit. If partner opens the bidding 1 of a minor they probably don't have 5 cards in a major suit (they would probably have opened 1 of that major). But they could still have 4 cards in a major suit. So, as responder, when you bid a new suit in response to partner's opening 1 level bid you only need 4 cards in that suit.

So when partner opens 1♦ and you respond 1♠ you tell partner that you have at least 6 HCP (you need 6 HCP in order to respond) and at least 4 cards in the ♠ suit. You could have more HCP and you could have more ♠. You can show extra's later in the auction.

Rules for Responding:
You want to always bid your LONGEST suit first (if you can).
If you have two 5 card suits and partner opens the bidding 1 of a minor always bid your higher ranking suit first.
If you have two 4 card major suits and partner opens the bidding 1 of a minor always bid your lower ranking suit first (♥).
If you have a fit for partner's minor but you also have a 4 card major, bid the major first. If you find a fit in that major -- GREAT. If not then you can always return to partner's minor later on in the auction.
