So you've opened 1 of a minor and partner bid 1 of a major. What do you know about partner's hand? You know that partner has at least 6 HCP and at least 4 cards in that major suit. To have an 8 card fit with partner you need 4 cards in that major also. If you have a fit with partner's major you want to show that right away. (If you don't then partner will never believe you have 4 in that major later on in the auction.) When you support their major you need to also show them whether or not you have just an opening hand, a better than opening hand or a hand that wants to game force it's SO good. You can show this by raising them 1 level, raising them 2 levels or bidding game in their major.
Remember to bid game in a major you should have at least 25 points between you and your partner.

This says partner I have a MOOSE -- about 19 to 21 points since I am bidding game when you only show 6 points
On the following hands you would have opened 1♦. Assume your partner responds 1♥. It is your turn to bid. Count your HCP. What will you say?
