Reverses VI - Openers rebids when Responder has shown a five card Major

This post is a continuation of previous posts. Please read them first and if you understand everything you can continue with this post.
Simple Reverses
Reverses Part II
Reverses Part III
Reverses IV - Responding to a Reverse
Reverses V - Responding with FIVE in your Original Major

We are going back to focus on Opener. Opener has just made a reverse bid and Responder rebid their major. We learned in the last reverse post that this shows a five card suit. What does Opener do now?

With support (three cards in the suit) Opener can raise Responder's suit.

Here's your hand:
♠KQ3
AK62
KQ842
♣8

You open the bidding 1. Partner bids 1♠. You then bid 2.

Partner went by the suit. For you to now talk about means you have just reversed. You should have five , four and 17+ HCP.

You do.

Partner bids 2♠.

Normally when Responder rebids their suit it shows a six card suit. Not after a reverse. For Responder to rebid their major suit after a reverse only shows a five card suit.

But even if Responder has a five card suit you have a fit! Tell Partner about it. Bid 3♠.

Responder should know you have five , four , 17 HCP and now you have shown three ♠.

If you are even stronger you can bid 4♠.

Take this hand:
♠KQ3
AK62
AKJ84

Since you have the values for a game even if Responder is minimum you can bid 4♠.

Responder should know you have five , four , and now you have shown three ♠ and 19+ HCP.

What do you do without a fit?

With extra length in either of your suits you can rebid your suit.

Take this hand:
♠Q3
AK62
AKJ842

You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have extra length in your suit. Rebid 3 to show a sixth .

What about extra length in your second suit?

Take this hand:
♠3
AKQ62
AKJ842

You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have extra length in your suit. Rebid 3 to show a fifth .

But if you had five and five wouldn't you have opened the bidding 1?

Absolutely YES. Therefore when you show a fifth you ALSO show a SIXTH .

What about a THIRD suit?

Take this hand:

AK83
KQJ82
♣KQJ8

You open the bidding 1. Partner bids 1♠. You then bid 2.

Partner went by the suit. For you to now talk about means you have just reversed. You should have five , four and 17+ HCP.

You do.

Partner bids 2♠.

Normally when Responder rebids their suit it shows a six card suit. Not after a reverse. For Responder to rebid their major suit after a reverse only shows a five card suit.

You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have another suit. Bid 3♣ to show another four card suit.

But if you had four , five and four ♣ that doesn't leave you many ♠ does it?

No. This shows extreme shortness in Responder's suit.

What happens if you have no extra length in either of your suits?

Do you have the unbid suit stopped? Bid NT.

With a minimum reverse and the unbid suit stopped bid 2NT. Responder is allowed to "Pass" this bid.

Take this hand:
♠3
KQ62
AKJ84
♣KJ8

You open the bidding 1. Partner bids 1♠. You then bid 2.

Partner went by the suit. For you to now talk about means you have just reversed. You should have five , four and 17+ HCP.

You do.

Partner bids 2♠.

Normally when Responder rebids their suit it shows a six card suit. Not after a reverse. For Responder to rebid their major suit after a reverse only shows a five card suit.

You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have the unbid suit stopped. Bid 2NT since you have a minimum reverse.

With a game forcing reverse and the unbid suit stopped bid 3NT. Responder is allowed to "Pass" this bid.

Take this hand:
♠3
AQJ6
AKJ84
♣KQ8

You open the bidding 1. Partner bids 1♠. You then bid 2.

Partner went by the suit. For you to now talk about means you have just reversed. You should have five , four and 17+ HCP.

You do.

Partner bids 2♠.

Normally when Responder rebids their suit it shows a six card suit. Not after a reverse. For Responder to rebid their major suit after a reverse only shows a five card suit.

You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have the unbid suit stopped. Bid 3NT since you have enough to force to game even if Responder has only 6 HCP.

To sum up:

When Partner rebid their major they only showed a five card suit. Do you have a fit with them? You need three cards in that suit.

Count your High Card Points. Do you have enough to force to game if Responder has only 6 HCP? If you have a fit and can bid a game bid 4♠.

If you have a fit and only a minimum reverse (17 or 18 HCP) just bid 3♠.

If you do not have three in Responder’s major then do you have extra length in either of your suits? Rebid your minor with a sixth card in the suit. Rebid your major with a fifth card in your suit. This should mean you have an extra card in your minor also since with five of a major and five of a minor you would open the bidding 1 of the major.

If you don’t have a fit for Responder and you don’t have extra length in the suit do you have another four card suit? You can bid that now.

If you don’t have a fit with Responder or extra distribution, do you have the unbid suit stopped? Bid 2NT with a minimum 17 or 18 HCP and the unbid suit stopped. Responder is allowed to “Pass” this bid. If you have at least 19 HCP and the unbid suit stopped bid 3NT.

Let's look at some examples. Do as many as you can before you get bored or frustrated. Then stop.
