Reverses VII - Responding with SIX in your Original Major or Bidding 3NT
This post is a continuation of previous posts. Please read them first and if you understand everything you can continue with this post.
Simple Reverses
Reverses Part II
Reverses Part III
Reverses IV - Responding to a Reverse
Reverses V - Responding with FIVE in your Original Major
Reverses VI - Openers rebids when Responder has shown a five card Major
We talked about what Responder can do with a weak hand and support for Opener. We talked about what Responder can do with a strong hand and support for Opener. We talked about Responder rebidding their major to show a five card suit. What other bids can Responder make?
With a SIX card suit and enough values for game Responder can rebid their suit jumping a level.
Here's your hand:
♠KQT863
♥2
♦KQ42
♣82
Partner opens the bidding 1♦. You bid 1♠. Partner then bids 2♥.
For Partner to now talk about ♥ means they have just reversed. They should have five ♦, four ♥ and 17+ HCP.
You have enough values to force to game. It sure would be nice to find a ♠ fit. Bidding 2♠ only shows a FIVE card suit and does not create a game force.
Bid 3♠.
This shows a SIX card suit and enough values for game.
What else can Responder do?
What happens if Responder does not have extra length in their major and no fit for either of Opener's suits and still wants to go to game?
They can bid 3NT.
This shows the values for game and the unbid suit stopped. Responder can even have a minor suit fit but thinks that NT will play better.
Take this hand:
♠QT83 ♥62 ♦J84 ♣AQ83 Partner opens the bidding 1♦. You bid 1♠. Partner then bids 2♥. For Partner to now talk about ♥ means they have just reversed. They should have five ♦, four ♥ and 17+ HCP. You have enough values to force to game. You do have a ♦ fit but the best chance at game here would be NT. You have the unbid suit stopped. Bid 3NT. Do NOT bid 2NT. This is the bid that forces Partner to rebid their suit at the 3 level so you can "Pass". You show a weak hand with 2NT. Let's look at some examples. Do as many as you can before you get bored or frustrated. Then stop. On each of the hands YOU are Responder. Partner will open the bidding 1♣. You will respond 1♥. Partner will then bid 2♦. You could have suggested playing in ♦. You did not. If you are to return to Partner's original suit you would have to do so at the 3 level. All these things suggest that this is a reverse bid. Partner has a big, unbalanced hand. So they should have five ♣, four ♦ and 17+ HCP. What do you do now? If you rebid your major at the 2 level you show a five card suit. If you rebid your major at the 3 level you show a six card suit and enough values for game (8+ HCP). If you now bid 3NT you show enough values for game (8+ HCP) and the unbid suit stopped. Hand 1♠ 93

Showing a fit
Playing matchpoints. You are vulnerable and the Opponents are not.
Here is your hand:
♠AT87
♥K86
♦5
♣AK964
Partner is Dealer and Passes. The Opponents are silent throughout the auction. You decide to open the bidding 1♣. Partner responds 1♠.
What is your call?
Show Answer
How about 3♠?
You only have 14 High Card Points but you have a singleton. You will be Dummy. You get to count 3 points for that singleton. Now you have 17 points.
Bidding 3♠ in this auction shows about 17 or 18 points.

What to Respond?
Playing matchpoints. You are not vulnerable but the Opponents are.
Here is your hand:
♠AT
♥Q9732
♦6
♣AQT94
Partner is Dealer and opens the bidding 1♦. Your RHO (Right Hand Opponent) bids "Pass".
What is your call?
Show Answer
1♥.
Some wanted to bid the ♣ suit first. It is a much better suit AND you get to bid at the 2 level and tell Partner you have at least 10 High Card Points.
Doesn't work that way. Now you never get a chance to show Partner you have FIVE ♥.
With two five card suits bid the HIGHER RANKING suit first. Always. In this case the ♥ suit.

Responding
Playing matchpoints. Both sides are vulnerable.
Here is your hand:
♠QT962
♥AKJ87
♦2
♣T2
Partner opens the bidding with 1♦. The Opponents are silent during the auction. What is your call?
Show Answer
1♠.
Yes, your ♥ are better. They are. I'll even give you much better. But they are not LONGER. That is more important.
If you respond 1♥ how are you ever going to convince Partner you have five ♠?
Partner will rebid 1NT. Now you can try bidding 2♠. This is a reverse. But this only shows four ♠ (and also five ♥!) and a hand that wants to go to game.
If Partner now bids 2NT you can try 3♠. That should show five ♠. But unfortunately it also shows SIX ♥. After all with two five (or six) card suits you bid the HIGHER RANKING suit first ALWAYS.
If you respond first with 1♠ Partner will respond 1NT. Now you can rebid 4♥. Partner can now choose what major suit they wish to play in.

Playing matchpoints. Neither side is vulnerable.
Here is your hand:
♠K7
♥J862
♦Q93
♣KJ86
Partner opens the bidding with 1♦. The Opponents are silent during the auction. You decide to respond 1♥. Now Partner bids 1♠.
What is your call?
Show Answer
How about 1NT?
You are balanced so you want to bid the NT since you can't support Partner. This shows 6 to 10 HCP with fewer than four ♠ because with four ♠ you would have supported Partner.
If you bid 2♣ you force Partner to bid again (new suit by Responder) and you might get too high!

Reverses VI - Openers rebids when Responder has shown a five card Major
This post is a continuation of previous posts. Please read them first and if you understand everything you can continue with this post.
Simple Reverses
Reverses Part II
Reverses Part III
Reverses IV - Responding to a Reverse
Reverses V - Responding with FIVE in your Original Major
We are going back to focus on Opener. Opener has just made a reverse bid and Responder rebid their major. We learned in the last reverse post that this shows a five card suit. What does Opener do now?
With support (three cards in the suit) Opener can raise Responder's suit.
Here's your hand:
♠KQ3
♥AK62
♦KQ842
♣8
You open the bidding 1♦. Partner bids 1♠. You then bid 2♥.
Partner went by the ♥ suit. For you to now talk about ♥ means you have just reversed. You should have five ♦, four ♥ and 17+ HCP.
You do.
Partner bids 2♠.
Normally when Responder rebids their suit it shows a six card suit. Not after a reverse. For Responder to rebid their major suit after a reverse only shows a five card suit.
But even if Responder has a five card suit you have a fit! Tell Partner about it. Bid 3♠.
Responder should know you have five ♦, four ♥, 17 HCP and now you have shown three ♠.
If you are even stronger you can bid 4♠.
Take this hand:
♠KQ3 ♥AK62 ♦AKJ84 ♣8 You open the bidding 1♦. Since you have the values for a game even if Responder is minimum you can bid 4♠. Responder should know you have five ♦, four ♥, and now you have shown three ♠ and 19+ HCP. What do you do without a fit? With extra length in either of your suits you can rebid your suit. Take this hand:
♠Q3 ♥AK62 ♦AKJ842 ♣8 You open the bidding 1♦. You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have extra length in your ♦ suit. Rebid 3♦ to show a sixth ♦. What about extra length in your second suit? Take this hand:
♠3 ♥AKQ62 ♦AKJ842 ♣8 You open the bidding 1♦. You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have extra length in your ♥ suit. Rebid 3♥ to show a fifth ♥. But if you had five ♥ and five ♦ wouldn't you have opened the bidding 1♥? Absolutely YES. Therefore when you show a fifth ♥ you ALSO show a SIXTH ♦. What about a THIRD suit? Take this hand:
♠ ♥AK83 ♦KQJ82 ♣KQJ8 You open the bidding 1♦. You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have another suit. Bid 3♣ to show another four card suit. But if you had four ♥, five ♦ and four ♣ that doesn't leave you many ♠ does it? No. This shows extreme shortness in Responder's suit. What happens if you have no extra length in either of your suits? Do you have the unbid suit stopped? Bid NT. With a minimum reverse and the unbid suit stopped bid 2NT. Responder is allowed to "Pass" this bid. Take this hand:
♠3 ♥KQ62 ♦AKJ84 ♣KJ8 You open the bidding 1♦. You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have the unbid suit stopped. Bid 2NT since you have a minimum reverse. With a game forcing reverse and the unbid suit stopped bid 3NT. Responder is allowed to "Pass" this bid. Take this hand:
♠3 ♥AQJ6 ♦AKJ84 ♣KQ8 You open the bidding 1♦. You still do not have a fit with Partner. But you do have the unbid suit stopped. Bid 3NT since you have enough to force to game even if Responder has only 6 HCP. To sum up:
When Partner rebid their major they only showed a five card suit. Do you have a fit with them? You need three cards in that suit. Count your High Card Points. Do you have enough to force to game if Responder has only 6 HCP? If you have a fit and can bid a game bid 4♠. If you have a fit and only a minimum reverse (17 or 18 HCP) just bid 3♠. If you do not have three in Responder’s major then do you have extra length in either of your suits? Rebid your minor with a sixth card in the suit. Rebid your major with a fifth card in your suit. This should mean you have an extra card in your minor also since with five of a major and five of a minor you would open the bidding 1 of the major. If you don’t have a fit for Responder and you don’t have extra length in the suit do you have another four card suit? You can bid that now. If you don’t have a fit with Responder or extra distribution, do you have the unbid suit stopped? Bid 2NT with a minimum 17 or 18 HCP and the unbid suit stopped. Responder is allowed to “Pass” this bid. If you have at least 19 HCP and the unbid suit stopped bid 3NT.

♠3 ♥AKQ62 ♦AKJ842 ♣8 You open the bidding 1♦.

Bids Over 1NT
Playing matchpoints. Neither side is vulnerable.
Here is your hand:
♠643
♥AK7
♦974
♣J875
Partner opens the bidding 1NT. You play that as 15 to 17 HCP. The Opponents are silent during the auction. What is your call?
Show Answer
I know with 8 High Card Points you are supposed to invite. However 2NT is really just inviting Partner to game if they have their maximum (17 HCP) and asking them to "Pass" if they are minimum.
The suggested values are 8 or 9 HCP.
But other things are involved here. Partner needs NINE tricks to make 3NT. You have two for them. Do you really think they have seven tricks in their hand?
Probably not.
With no source of tricks for Partner you need a VERY nice hand from Partner to make game. (A good source of tricks would be a five card suit.)
Generally if you are VERY balanced (4-3-3-3 in each of the suits) you need more total values to make a game (27 or 28 HCP rather than 25 or 26 HCP) since you have no source of tricks.
A good idea to remember is with 4-3-3-3 hands, subtract one point for how balanced they are. So your 8 HCP now becomes 7. So even if Partner is maximum you will not make a game most of the time.
Even with a 4-3-3-3 10 HCP hand I would recommend inviting rather than just bidding 3NT. 10 HCP minus 1 because of how balanced the hand is only comes up to 9 points. With 9 points you invite game.
Change the hand slightly to:
♠643
♥A72
♦97
♣KJ875
and I would invite for sure. Partner might be able to set up the ♣ suit for four or five winners.

Reverses V - Responding with FIVE in your Original Major
This post is a continuation of previous posts. Please read them first and if you understand everything you can continue with this post.
Simple Reverses
Reverses Part II
Reverses Part III
Reverses IV - Responding to a Reverse
We are again going to focus on Responder. What does Responder do if they have a five card major and their Partner has just made a reverse?
Here's your hand:
♠KQ853
♥K6
♦K8
♣8642
Partner opens the bidding 1♦. You (as Responder) bid 1♠. Partner then bids 2♥.
You went by the ♥ suit. For Opener to now talk about ♥ means Opener has just reversed. Opener should have five ♦, four ♥ and 17+ HCP.
But Opener could still have three ♠. You still might have a nice ♠ fit. (Opener should not have four ♠ or they would have supported you instead of bidding ♥.)
Responder can REBID their original major suit to show FIVE in the suit. Normally when Responder rebids a suit it shows a SIX card suit. But after a reverse by Opener it only shows a FIVE card suit.
Rebidding your major does NOT put a game force on the auction but it IS forcing for at least one round. Opener cannot "Pass".
So on this auction you can safely bid 2♠. Partner will not "Pass". If Partner raises your ♠ suit you have a VERY nice fitting hand. You might even make a slam!
Let's look at some examples. Do as many as you can before you get bored or frustrated. Then stop.
Hand 1
♠ T972
♥ J8
♦ A82
♣ J542
This is the auction:
First count your High Card Points. With 8 or more you have enough values for game since Opener should have at least 17.
Do you have a five card major? Partner might still have a fit for your major. Rebid your major at the 2 level to let Partner know. You are still not on a game forcing auction so you could be weak.
If you do not have a five card major then do you have a fit for either of Opener’s suits? When Opener makes a reverse they should have FIVE in their original suit and four in their second suit.
With a weaker hand (6 or 7 HCP) bid 2NT to force Opener to bid 3♦.
With enough values for game show support for either of Opener's suits. This shows a fit and enough values for game.
