This is chapter 1 in the story of my attempt to determine if it is better to open 1
♥ or 1NT with 15 to 17 HCP and a five card
♥ suit.
The journey started with this post:
Later On
Here is the first hand I generated with
♥ as the major:
Hand 1
|
North♠J2♥AKQT8♦A76 ♣K84 |
|
West♠K73 ♥97654♦J542 ♣J |
|
East♠65♥J2♦T983 ♣QT762 |
|
South♠AQT984♥3♦KQ ♣A953 |
|
Dealer is North and no one is vulnerable.
Double Dummy:
6NT can make by N/S
6♠ can make by N/S
6♥ can make by N/S
4♦ can make by N/S
4♣ can make by N/S
Analysis
If North opens up 1NT I think South certainly has a slam try in ♠ which North will certainly accept. Playing normal Standard American Yellow Card 3♠ is a slam try. But there are many other ways to show a slam try depending on the tools you play.
What happens if North opens 1♥?
South will start with 1♠. Now North will show their point count by bidding 2NT. South will certainly get the partnership to 6♠ now.
So I think this one won't really matter what North opens -- either way South will get the partnership to a 6♠ slam which will easily make.
